No real goals to buy a particular coin or complete a particular set. I tend to collect old silver and modern gold when available at bargain prices, and some exonumia. This provides enough variety to keep in interesting while narrowing the search enough to exclude most coins.
MY goals Hi all: As I am a newbie, I am starting by focusing on the more modern USA coins like the IKE, SBA, SAC dollars and Kennedy half. I have everything that the US MINT produced for the 50 State Quartere program except for 4 of the spoons. I am also doing the same for the presidental dolllars except for the Spouse gold pieces. I would like to get into the older coins but at this time, I do not feel comfortable with my knowledge level.
I don't like goals. Having a goal seems to imply that I'll eventually be done collecting! NEVARRRR!!!! Lol. But if I had to choose one - I want my ancient collection to be good enough for it to be published when I die, that it may live beyond me.
Here is some of my goals at the moment http://www.gxseries.com/numis/numis_index.htm Some of them are definately insanely difficult to complete such as the early Korean gold coins... but it's good to dream isn't it?
This is a fascinating thread and I agree with many of you. As far as a coin that I would someday like to own, that would be a MS 1901-S Barber Quarter, the king of all 20th century coins. I would also someday like to own a type set of Turban Head golds. These are someday goals, and I have to believe a bit of fantasy. I am currently starting to work on Full Step Jeffersons as I truly believe that a complete set IS out there, just yet undiscovered. those are the dreams of this collector...
When you obtain a goal, all you have to do is make a new goal. ie: Finish your complete collection of 20th and 21st century coins, move back antoher century and start there
Why? There are several rarer coins and more valuable coins. I would be hard-put to call anything except the 1933 Saint-Gaudens the king of the 20th century, let alone the king of all American coinage. There may be contenders in the rest of the world, but I don't know of them.
My goal is to complete my Morgan dollar set (which is on the back burner at the moment) and I want to get a 1 dollar gold and a three dollar gold. In the mean time I keep acummulating.
respectfully, I said that the 01-S is the king of 20th century coins and as evidence I submit that the 1901-S is the rarest of the key date 20th century coins. I couldn't consider the 1913 nickels or the 33 St. Gaudens simply because they were not made for general consumption. This is also purely MHO. Are there coins that may be harder to find, perhaps, but the 01-S is they key date to the Barber Quarter series, a series that was widely circulated and therefore are difficult to find in the middle grades.... Much like the 1916-D mercury dime, you will see this coin all day long in AG to G, occasionally, you'll see a VG, but the 01-S in XF or high-end VF is harder to find than in mint state. To be fair to the Lincoln cent, I consider the 09-S VDB to be the most sought-after coin of the 20th century.
Mike: I have to agree with your assessment about the 1901 S, however: 1) It has a mintage of 72,000 2) the 1913 S Barber Quarter has a mintage of 40,000 and is very hard to obtain in high grades. 3) The 1916 Standing Lib. quarter has a mintage of 52,000 and (as you know) the date wore off rapidly, often in less than 10 years, which is why the 1925 quarter had the date recessed. It is a mystery why the 01 s is more than the other two dates, but I agree that it is a scarce coin. And yes, both the 1616 D and the 09S-VDB are more popular and sought after coins.
I/we have pretty modest goals at this point. We, meaning Thalia Elizabeth and I, reached one with the purchase of the 1922 and 1925 dates earlier this month: a complete year set of Canada Small Cents, at least until 2008 comes along. (We're not counting the varieties within each date although we have the -Ps with the exception of the 1999-P.) If we can pick up an inexpensive George III coin, Thalia will have the British Monarchs that correspond to the history of the United States. It would be cool to get a 1776 date but I doubt that's within reach so we may have to settle for a date in the 1800's for now. I reached a minor goal with the purchase of a basic 1876-CC dime. I always wanted to have an affordable Carson City minted coin. A Morgan would have been nice, but the Seated Liberty design is growing on me. Many years ago, in my first iteration of the hobby, I completed a Jefferson Nickel set, but I'd have to go back and fill in the last 20 years or so to get that "re-completed" (is that a word?). Oh, and I'll take one of those Pan-Pacific $50s also!
Sort of in the same situaltion here. Of course well over 60 years of collecting. Now with over 100 Whitman Classic Albums and most all filled, many boxes of 2x2's, unknown quantity of plastic rolls of uncircs, Coins in 2x2's in 3 ringed binders, in jars waiting to be sorted, etc, etc, etc. Also, close to the end myself and no one that is interested in receiving as an inheritance. Coming back from stage 4 cancer makes me realize don't save for tomorrow. There well may not be one.
Carl - I hope you are doing well and have many years of collecting ahead of you. Maybe there is a local museum that would love to inherit your collection. It would probably make a wonderful exhibit for school trips and educational purposes. Probably none of us has a collection that would impress the Smithsonian, but the smaller museums are sometimes very happy to be able to acquire collections of a variety of items. Coins would probably interest many of them.
I would like to collect at least one Civil War token from each of the 400 issueing cities. Considering that even George and Melvin Fuld did not accomplish this (it is estimated that at one time they owned approximately half of all of the remaining cwts), I will not be holding my breath. Some cites have known cwt populations as low as 2-4, while some entire states have known cwt pops in the 5-10 range. I haven't checked recently, but I think I have around 165 issueing cities so far.
Goal My Goal is to get my sets done so i don't have to do any more sets. I am doing a year set of Large Cents. Ike and Kennedys in BU and Proof. When done I want to just buy what I am attracted to. Tony
My current obsession besides Lincolns, is a 1793 Wreath large cent, as long as all lettering is readable, thats a high enough grade for me and the budget. A nice no problem F-12 would be awesome. Later folks....of to see TSO concert tonight, yeee hawwww
