I attend four local coin club meetings each month (Local is a bit of a stretch, the closest s 40 miles away, the farthest 70 miles) The smallest has about 20 members the largest has 160. Two of them have auctions, one small the other from 150 to 250 items each month. Only one has an educational program each month. That one stresses numismatics more than the others and that club has produced at least three members who have written books a couple of major specialized collections and also three presidents of the ANA. The big auction club on the other hand had the chance to host one of the Central States Numismatic Society Seminars (All we had to do was be the host, no cost or expense to the club, the CSNS paid for everything) and they turned it down with the explanation "We're an auction club, not an educational club." (Pretty bad in my opinion for what is the largest club in the state.)

I'll have to echo something treylxapi said, I have heard a lot of people complain that they just didn't get anything out of their local club, if you want you club to be or do something different don't just sit there! Become an officer and start working to move the club in the direction you think it needs to go!. Believe me clubs are always looking for someone to step forward and start helping out. Most clubs wind up becoming stuck in a rut because they have the same officers year after year. Trying to get someone else to volunteer to be a officer is like pulling teeth. Everyone want to sit their and let someone else do it, and then complain about the way it is being done. So get in there and help. As the saying goes, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
