Very nice one icerain. The proof of 1969 is rare and pricy.

How can you tell its a proof? I had a tough time telling, and even asked the store owner who said its a regular coin that is uncirculated.

Did not say it is a proof. Your coin is KM 80.1, meaning the legent is in English "Africa" not Afrikaans "Afrika" like KM 80.2. The South African mint does not acknowledge KM 80.1 in proof, but they do exist with estimated mintage of 20. I believe those pieces were given to "goverment members" and would have never left the mint for circulation. The Afrikaans KM 80.2 proof mintage is 12,000 and there might be a few that were handled. It is still special since it was at the height of economic power with some of worlds latest circulated silver.

Thanks Derick, I did some searching and according to NGC's database there are both proof and circulating coins minted. In either case this coin does look proof-like like to me, the raised edges, color and strike. In any case I did not pay much for it at all.

Here are the only proof pictures I could find from link above. Note the difference in the mounth area at first glance.
