I completely agree with this statement. Look at the "big 4" who are on our coins. I would say that those 4 men did a lot for this country.

Start with Washington and Jefferson. Two of the founding fathers. These men helped to lay the foundation of this country. That country of "Liberty" and those other ideals...they authored it. Jefferson was involved in the writing of both the Deceleration of Independence and the US Constitution. Washington led us through the Revolutionary War. If these men were "corrupt politicians" trying to "line their and their cronies' pockets" then I guess this country was founded on that.

Look at Lincoln. He led us through the Civil War. Had he not done such a good job of it...the US might not exist today, at least not in its current form. He was a politician...but I have never heard anyone describe him as corrupt.

FDR (I already here the boos and the hisses)...I know that as a general rule coin collectors are quite conservative and such so his political stances don't exactly fit with our views. I'm not going to get into his politics because this is not the place for that. But, he took over the Presidency during the great depression and led us out of it. When WWII came to our shores he led us through it.

My point is, these 4 men were the leaders of this country at times when we needed someone to lead it. Had they not been successful in their jobs...our country might look much worse today. I think these 4 men were chosen very wisely for our coins. If we were going to put "dead presidents" on them...these 4 seem well chosen to me.

As for JFK...well, he doesn't really help my argument. But, he was among the most publicly popular presidents we ever had and he was assassinated in office. So, I guess as a tribute to his popularity...he got a coin. IMHO, he is by far the least fitting president on our coins.

He did...but I think that would have happened anyway. It's true he was a big supporter of the space program, but the moon made sense. That wasn't something he just pulled out of his backside and suggested it. We knew that was really the only thing we could beat the Russians to in space.

I'm not saying he was a bad President. I just think he is different from the other 4.
