I was looking through the Die states of DDO-009 as die stage C comes along it shows some more doubling on the date especially the 9. The 2 looks a lot like the one in the OP's photo. Both the 009 and the Mdo have a lot of the same characteristics, I am more than Happy to agree with Rick, it is just stage C and the OP's coin look alike.
The numerous 1972 hub doublings drove me nuts when I was a kid. At the time the DDO was discovered, I was 8 and just starting to get serious about collecting. My grandmother saved all of 1972 cents she found for me to check. I figured it would be easy to spot with my new magnifying glass, but with so many “maybe”, “not sure”, “I don’t know” I just gave up. There wasn’t a lot of info available at the time and I had only seen one picture a few months before. I must have been seeing these annoying minor hub doublings.
They look a lot alike because the 009 was struck by a die that also had the master die doubling. Also, Stage C doesn't show any other doubling than the bar over the 2. That is MD on the left side of the date. The bar of the 2 is doubled to the north, not east/west. Notice how much thinner the tail of the 9 and the diagonal of the 2 looks. Below is Wexler's description of 009. Notice he states it was struck from a die that had the master die doubling. Copied from John Wexler: http://doubleddie.com/384301.html 1972 1¢ WDDO-009 "Best Of" Variety Description: A strong CW spread shows on the horizontal bar of the 2 in the date.
