He told me he built a box with a light in it for taking pics. I don't think he is trying to fool anybody. He is sending me one of the key date coins for mr to inspect, then I will decide if I want the others. Can't beat that?

I really do not know what he does. With the cameras today, filters are not necessary. All you have to do is set the white balance. If it will help any, look at the background. First off, it is not sharp. Secondly, notice the brown cast. (Were I guessing, I would say it actually is plane gray.) If anyone can interpolate those clues, they might be able to determine just what he does.

I'm not saying they are or they aren't but I am commenting on how they are all the same color... whether this is caused by the photography methods used or cleaning is impossible to determine. But that from my experience coins all the same color are not a good sign.

I know what you are saying. Has I not had so much experience with him, I would tend to agree with you. However, look at his feedback. He has a lot saying that the coin does not quite look like its picture. He has none stating that the coin was cleaned. He used to have one, but that was for a coin that he had listed as cleaned. (I would like to know how he got rid of it.)

There's no doubt in my mind that this seller is doctoring coins. A lot of them have obvious wear but not a nick or scratch to be found? Plus go look at this sellers buyer feedback and see what he's buying. Nothing but VF-XF-AU wheats,a lot of them with problems, obviously to flip. They sure don't look like the same coins now!

He may push the envelope a bit as do most salesmen. However, I really don't think he is really out to cheat people.

I'll go on record with this also - if it looks to good to be true, well,,, - they just do not come this way or the photos are doctored big time!
"What would you rather have, doctored photos or a doctored coin"?
    The answer is "none"!

And you say this based on which facts? How many coins have you bought from him that were cleaned/doctored? Both arizonajack and I have bough from him. FWIW, Jack thinks he doctors his photos. In the technical sense, I don't. However, neither of us think he sells doctored coins.

No,I've never bought from this seller, and I wouldn't from what I've seen. I looked at a couple auctions from the last batch a couple weeks ago and they all had the same description: "looks like old cleaning that has started to retone". That was the exact wording in every auction. There's many other places to buy wheats and i'm just not going to take chances on auctions like these.

I don't see much of a difference between doctoring your coins and doctoring your pictures... both misrepresent the coin and personally I think they are the same evil just done different ways.

RLM everything you said could very well be true. There is a large cent seller's who has pictures that look just like that very first coin - I will not buy from either just because the coins(or the pictures) look doctored. Yes - the same was said of this seller that you have said here. It could be(and probably is since I trust your opinion) true - but I will not buy because I just do not want take the gamble. Yes I understand I might miss some nice coins, but why take the gamble of paying the return shipping and handling. My opinion only. The good news is it might make the auction cheaper for you, since we won't be competing. :)

I asked earlier in this thread about my Morgan dollars. They mostly were graded and in those plastic holders, but I took them out and put them in my books. I kept the holders, is this ok?? You guys have to remember, I am new at this. I have went to fast, aquired alot of coins quickly, and over paid, been cheated, and all the other things that happen to new collectors. I bought a bunch of wheats today, about 4000, and I quit for awhile.

Were the Morgans - PCGS or NGC certified? Could probably throw ICG and ANAC's in the list, but still have to be careful with those two. As for is it okay? Yes - if you like them raw and kept the stickers. The only problem might be when you go to sell - people seem to put more faith(ie bidding) on graded coins than raw coins? BUT if you are happy they with them raw then that makes it okay. There are several around here who free coins from the holders. I am not one of them, but think it is okay. As for overpaying and being cheated - we probably have all been there(at least me). One of the things stressed around here is learn first - buy second. While in this case that it not possible - you might remember the lessons better. All of us have made mistakes in the past - to me the key is just enjoying the hobby.

So now that you have some complete sets you can kick back, enjoy them, learn about them and take your time on deciding what you next move is. For example - on the Morgans, have you checked them for VAM's? Now the wheaties you can also check for varieties - there are some sites like lincoln cent resource site that talks about some of those. So you should probably look at getting some books on Morgans and Lincolns to start with.

If your holders are PCGS or NGC, you absolutely should not take them out of their "holders" regardless of whether or not you keep the holders. I would not recommend doing it for any company at least until you know what you are doing. I do not know what your goal is in collecting, but they will at best be much more difficult to sell once removed and likely for less dollars.

Those colors are so even it is unreal. The only time I have ever seen cents that color is after some hard core doctoring.

Do not read more into my comment than is there. I no longer do business with him. He gets good money for his coins and I am looking for bargains plus I am after uncs and he sells few of them. His pictures are off enough that they are hard for me to read.

However, his pluses are 1) never got a cleaned coin from him and from the looks of his feedback, he does not sell them unless he announces that they have been cleaned. 2) Every mark I saw on his coins in hand, I could find in his pictures, maybe not obvious, but they were there. 3) he honored his return policy.

Yesterday I posted this picture to see what you guys might think the dimple is, any ideas? [IMG] I have more to post later today of some oddities I have.

You need to post these type questions in "error coins" section, but it's a dimple rasied above the copper plating. May have been a hit to the die or something on the zinc before being plated by copper or something in the copper itself.

Error Coins, thanks for the link. I have a few of these types of oddities. Going through a recent box of pennies I came across a penny that has another dimple like raised mention at the end of the number nine, (I'll post to error coins later today). One penny has had the number one completely removed looks like it was scraped off
    (?)

    Thanks again.

Before reading the other responses, I was getting the impression that they might be modern counterfeits because I was seeing depressions, sharp edges, questionable mint mark styles, flawless fields and uniform color. Mind you, I don't collect Lincolns. They probably are just doctored physically and digitly. I would not buy from that seller.
