I have been hearing differant arguments when submitting coins for certification and grading, so I would appreciate yours... I travel throughout the Southeast and when I have some time, I like to drop in on some of the local coin shops to see what they have in stock. You know of woman that can't walk through a show store without buying a pair, well I am like that to some degree when it comes to looking at coins. At least my coins are still with me...can't say the same for my ex-wife's shoe collection. :) I picked up over the last year about 15 to 20 slabs from what I would call "second-tier" slabbing companies other than PCGS, NGC, ICG or ANACS. The coins look great because I bought the coin and not the slab...but I know that if I got nearly the same grade of the particular coin in a PCGS or NGC holder, then they would be worth way more than the "second" tiered slabs. I know about submitting coins for a "cross-over" versus submitting them raw. I often wondered if the graders at say, PCGS which would receive a coin slabbed by company "X", would say to themselves..."Here's a coin slabbed by those jokers at X company...you might as well already deduct 2 grades from their grade before we even look at it." Or should I break them out and send them in raw? That way, there are no preconceived notions on the coin. I know that companies like PCGS wouldn't break out a coin if you designate a minimum grade on the form, but they still charge you for it. Thoughts??
