I have posted this question before on other forms without much success. In 2015, I decided to put a Canada Small Cent collection together which would include all four strike types, Business (MS), Prooflike (PL), Specimen (SP), and Proof (PR) from 1981 to 2012 including all dates and major varieties and mint marks. In 1983, there are two main varieties found in circulation strikes (business strikes), Near Beads and Far Beads. I was able to buy a set of the two varieties is MS-65 Red. I have used these two varieties as a way to determine the variety of all other 1983 Canada Small Cents. By placing the 1983 penny in question in the middle of these two known varieties, I can quickly and easily identify it correctly. The price guide suggests, as does the Charlton Canada Coin Guide, that both 1983 Small Cent varieties exist for all four mint strike types. The price guide lists the Far Beads variety as the most common in all four mint strike types with the lowest cash value. However, I have never found a single coin dealer who has offered both varieties for sale as a set in any mint strike type other than those coins minted for circulation. No coin dealer has ever offered both varieties in a paired set in PL, SP, or PR. In addition, I have never found both types side by side in photos in any mint strike type other than business. It has been confirmed by one researcher in an article that Far Beads does not exist in Proof. This was confirmed by an RCM official as only one die was used and it was the Near Beads variety. However, there have been reports that Far Beads does exist in PL and SP, but I have never found one. A few coin dealers have offered 1983 Far Beads variety Small Cents for sale in PL. I purchased one coin from each of these dealers and every time the 1983 penny was misidentified as Far Beads when it was in fact Near Beads. In my collection, I have 1983 Small Cent Near Beads variety in MS, PL, SP, and PR, but only Far Beads in MS. With no photographic evidence of Far Beads existing in any other mint strike type other than business strike made for circulation, I have to determine that Far Beads does not exist in any mint strike type other than Business (circulation) strikes. Does anyone have photographic evidence that Far Beads exists in PL or SP? I would need to see both varieties side by side in the same photo in the same mint strike type to believe it. Do you know of any coin dealers who sell both varieties as a paired set in PL and SP? Maybe I have just been unlucky and both varieties do exist in PL and SP. If you have both varieties in PL and/or SP, could you please post photos with them side by side in one photo, so I can see them. If you have extras to trade or sell, let me know. I want Far Beads in PL and SP if they exist in those mint strike types to complete my set. Thanks.
