In a week of really fun acquisitions, I bought not only the VOTIS DECENNALIBVS but also a CONSECRATIO issue of Septimius Severus. Considering that you do not see many of either of these coins for sale often, these were probably two of the most exciting purchases of the year for me. In addition, the universe must have read my "sunlight is the best for taking coin pictures because of nice even light" statement on a prior post because my pictures today, taken in sunlight, are literally the two biggest piles of garbage ever. But I had limited time and so they will have to do. Septimius Severus, Denarius, CONSECRATIO AR Denarius Septimius Severus Augustus: 193 - 211AD Issued Posthumously under Caracalla: 211AD 19.61mm 3.36gr O: DIVO SEVERO PIO; Bare head, right. And of course, the link to the collection as a whole: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=6295 In order to mix it up a bit, feel free to add any Septimius Severus coins AND/OR any of your favorite DIVO/DIVA/DIVVS coins!
My latest DIVA/CONSECRATIO addition--arrived in the mail only Monday: Diva Faustina II (Died 175/6) Roman orichalcum sestertius, 26.28 g, 32.6 mm Rome, struck under Marcus Aurelius, AD 176 or later Obv: DIVA FAVSTINA PIA, bare-headed and draped bust right Rev: CONSECRATIO S - C, Faustina, holding scepter, seated left on back of peacock flying upward to right Refs: RIC 1702; BMCRE 1570; Cohen 69; RCV 5227; MIR 56.
That's really nice... the portrait and eagle are excellent. The provincial cities seem to have struck consecration issues infrequently. This Divus Septimius from Odessus was a notable exception, except that the Divus part of the legend is missing on mine . DIVUS SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS AE25. 7.75g, 24.7mm, THRACE, Odessus, struck after AD 211 under Caracalla & Geta. Varbanov 4352 var. (bust type). O: [DIVW SEY]-HRW PEIW, bare head right. R: ODHCC-EITWN, Great God of Odessus, wearing kalathos, standing left, holding cornucopiae and holding patera over flaming altar to the left.
Great silver coin nicholasz219, Septimius Severus had some good bust types on his coinage especially the way he wore his beard, note my avatar. Got heaps S/Severus and Diva types but this Sestertius of Diva Faustina and her temple in the Forum is a favorite.
Nice Septimus Severus Divo @nicholasz219 ! I really like the Eagle over Globe design. I throw in a couple DIVUS: RI Constantius I Chlorus 293-306 CE DIVO AE Quinarius Thesalonika 317-318 Seated RIC VII 25 R5 RARE RI Augustus DIVUS under Tiberius 22-23 CE Radiate Alter
Mine is as green as any bronze in my collection. There is one of these for sale emphasizing the fact that Greek should have used Theos rather than transliterated Divos. http://www.akropoliscoins.com/page3.html scroll down to #9 In any event it is an interesting coin. Some eagles perch on an altar. Divus Severus from Rome also comes in the funeral pyre version which I have: ...and a throne version which I lack. They also come in sestertii which are scarce and not in my collection. The scarcity of each of these suggests that Caracalla was not all that upset at being left senior Augustus.
Thanks for the interest and replies, everyone. Thanks for the link @dougsmit. I did look at it. Unfortunately those coins are all out of reach but interesting to learn about nonetheless.
