@Savarog there are multiple factors why you didn't have a good success rate. Firstly, the coins being offered were rather scarce and only occasionally come up at auctions. Those who didn't want to lose out probably put in higher bids than they actually wanted to pay simply because they didn't know when the next opportunity to purchase a similar coin would arise. Secondly, GC did a good job of promoting their ancients this time and their clients had already started frothing at the mouth before the buzzer went off. I was following about 15-20 coins but as the bidding progressed, I dropped most of them even though I had previously bid on them.....didn't even want to watch what they sold for. Thirdly, the ancients market has been relatively quite for 18-24 months but has really picked up during recent 4-6 months. Playing catch up I suppose!!! Finally, and the most important one.....you stalked me at Roma and HA in the past.....now I'm the stalker and have turned the tables on you my friend Hope you have better luck in future
Najib I mostly agree with your point #2- this time i got multiple email campaigns where they actually featured all “star” designated ancient coins in the body of the email.. well, looking forward to see what other coins you won at GC P.S. I Will still be following you closely on HA and Roma and probably other houses... keep it real!!
Just because you asked, here is the smaller coin I won for $1,250. It had previously sold at HA in September 2017 for $1,560. So a discount of 20-25% depending on which way you look at it. It seems to be one of the scarcer types of Lesbos, Mytilene El Hecte:
The real auction is in the last 30 seconds. Don't place simultaneous bids on so many coins that you can't keep track of any of them. If you're bidding on multiple auctions try and leave a few minutes between them. Do your research and make sure that you set a limit on each coin. If you bid on to many, what would you do if you won them all? Recent sales is an invaluable tool and you can find them in the TPG'S, eBay and several auction sites. If you put all of your money into a auction upfront you will lose the auction. IMHO
If you're still looking, I just got an email from HJB with their after auction buys. There are quite a few Athenian New Styles there. Give it a look: https://www.hjbltd.com/#!/inventory...paign=208 After Sale 10% OFF&utm_medium=email
About 20 years ago or so there was a huge hoard of new style tets on the market. You could get flawed VF's for $100 all day long retail. Strong VF to near EF were around $200. This lot here sold CNG in 2003 for $3k (and that was a Triton auction where prices tend to be twice average). One wonders where all those coins are now? They dont seem to be cycling back to the market.
Wow @Ken Dorney, was not aware of that hoard.. times have sure changed! @physics-fan3.14 Ironically I already found my coin ...it was lot #89 in that sale
I love that one! It was on my short list for bidding but ultimately I didn't even get a chance to go for it.
