If the gov. wants to do the right thing they won't listen to the people and just get rid of it. If the gov. wants to do the right thing they would also get rid of the paper dollar. People will adapt and it would not take long before they forget these even existed.
when i was in school the kids that thru away their pennies always seemed like the ones askin if they can borrow any money? or in the real sense can i have some money !!! is there any common sense of value anymore even if its small. i see some today and guess what ---> they still look like they are broke
I pick them up, too...good exercise! It's been quite a while since I even got a wheatie...let alone a 1913 :thumb:
Neither do I although I think they should. They just aren't very useful anymore due to inflation and I would imagine money could be saved if we stopped producing them. It's not going to happen...but we should do away with the cent and the 50 cent piece IMHO.
Guys, guys, guys - since when did CoinTalk welcome political comments?.... I believe that I've gotten all of the posts that went off topic - and Tom, I got yours just for good measure LOL...JUST KIDDING! PLEASE go back to talking about the cent - if any more comments are left that are political, this thread will be closed, and a infraction will be given. Speedy
Did you know: The Smithsonian Museum coin exhibit in Washington DC has a 'Vote' display regarding keeping the penny. To vote, you roll your penny down a marked slide where the coins can be counted to see who wins. I'm sure this result carries about as much weight as my opinion on the subject. If you eliminate the penny, please also eliminate the nickel at the same time. Since the government loses more money on each nickel it makes, we really don't want to increase demand there. That makes almost as much sense as changing the designs on the coins and encouraging people to remove them from circulation. If we stopped collecting sales tax on each sale and required merchants simply to pay the tax on gross receipts, we would need no coin smaller than the cheapest thing being sold as an individual unit (how much is penny candy these days?). Of course they would raise prices to cover it but we could also hire cheaper labor for cashiers and we would not need to teach such advanced math in schools. If you think this is a joke, pay your next few bills for $1.24 with a dollar, a quarter and four pennies and see how may clerks have trouble with the concept of giving you a nickel. Poll: How many of you prefer Wendy's 99 cent Super Value item over the matching McDonald's $1 menu item because of the one cent and how many prefer it because it has a larger slice of onion?
I want the cent to stay. There must be something they could make them from that would bring the cost down.
Speedy you have deleted my post comments. There was nothing politically inferred in it. Fact is Fact. This is BS!!!
I have requested that this thread be canceled. All we have to do is request the thread that we don't agree with be cancelled? COOL..
There were patterns of cents made from plastic and various other materials during WWII. I'm pretty sure a couple are listed in the Patterns section of the Redbook. We ended up with the zinc coated steel cent.
Why is it that we can't just start threads, appropriately titled, talk about what interests us and respond back and forth? The folks who like to stay in their bubbles can just do so by NOT reading said threads. Sheesh. people really must be afraid of independent thinking or something, to not even allow any discussions to even take place, even if the "injured" are not participatory in the first place! Unbelievable...(bring me another Toddy lovey) Edit: I think pennies are really cool. They're pretty. I've seen hundreds of them. Do you like pennies too? I think your pennies are great too.
Come on folks. The political comments did get out of hand. The thread is back on track. In my opinion the zinc coated steel and the copper coated zinc were poor choices. I wonder if there is something that could be added to zinc to make it better for coins?
cannot, will not, be taken out of circulation as long as coinage is acceptable medium of trade and sales tax is applied. why do I see so many posts about this subject?
Why ? Because we have these things called rules. And ya know what Tom, just for those folks like you who want to talk about such things, we created your own special forum, all on its own web site and everything. So you can discuss political issues as much as you want. And believe it or not Tom, there are far more people who frequent this forum who DO NOT like the poiltical discussions to take place here. And they complain about it - loudly and frequently. And since we don't like them either - well, guess who wins ?
