I would like to know what total sales are to date. I tried looking on the mint website, but couldn't find this information.

Thanks for the link,Schatzy. Sales are definitely trending downwards. I don't see this coin selling out. The impending release of the Boy Scout coin may surpress sales even further. Some collectors may not have enough green these days to afford both. I don't know if there are enough institutional/bulk dealer buyers (who buy 100 coin lots, etc.) to offset this effect. My guess is that most of the biggies have bought their lots already, because they want to distribute them to deserving members (fraternal and veteran organizations) or they want to submit for grading early to get these silly pseudo-'first strike' designations on their coins (bulk dealers).

Maybe the mint should consider staggering the releases with one coin in the spring and one in the fall; any economist will tell you that consumers tend to prefer to smooth their spending of non-durables over time rather then buy them all at once. Maybe that makes too much sense for a government agency to implement... OK, maybe I'm the real fool here and I got it all wrong:( Plus, I work for the federal government so I shouldn't poke that much fun at the mint for being inefficient and misguided in its policies.

Your taste brought the image of the kid with a bandage on his head, banging a drum at the head of marching platoon.(or was that flute)And a song saying,"when Johnny comes marching home."I am glad you thought of it,it's a good image.Although the civil war comemorative coin may have a drummer already. My memory's a bit foggy.

The 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollar added 12,432 more coins in the latest week. The combined total across both proof and uncirculated versions has now reached 166,368 out of the maximum authorized mintage of 350,000.

I want to apologize to everyone here on my prediction. I did not do my due diligence in research before I spouted off about the Disabled Veterens Coin.
I really just started collecting commeratives in 2009, starting with the Lincoln. I saw an increase in that price , as well as other commens in the past, 2001 Buffalo, 1930's commens, etc...

After I realized the Disabled Veterens wasn't selling as good as I thought, I went into research as to why. I have always done my research , and did on this coin, but NOT deep enough...

It seems that the U.S. Mint has, for years, played on the heart strings of our Veterens when it comes to commerative coins. Had I realized that :
    1) 1991 Korean War Memorial coin.
    2) 1991 USO commenorative coin.
    3) 1991-1995 50th anniversay World War II
    4) 1994 - Vietnam Veterens memorial coin
    5) 1994- U.S. Prisoner of War coin.
    6) 1994- Women of Military coin.
    7) 1995 - Civil War Battlefields coin.
    8) 2002 - West point Bicentennial coin
    9) 2005- Marine Corps 230th Anniversary coin.
There may be more, but it seems they have sucked as much out of the poor Veterens as they can, and seems most have tired of it. I thought this was the first year to celebrate them, and they should of started with the disabled. And I am sorry I did not do my research first on this.
But, I can see where enough is enough. But , I did make a purchase, but I hope they give them a break.
With the Boy Scouts coming out now, I can see that it may be popular due to they have never recognized them in the past. I now look at it, if they have not done coins in the past, to anticipate a winner in the future.

My .02, I hope you like my analogy....

Coinage - including commemoratives - is dictated to the mint by Congress. However I do think the politicians do play into these military themed coins much as you describe. Actually politicians fall over themselves to do this PR stuff. Doing material things like getting rid of mold in VA hospitals can be more questionable.
