dont get me wrong...I love a nice toned coin and would never dip a coin with attractive tone....but like others have said...its personal taste...

Some people like bright rainbow toned coins and will even pay a premium for them...I hate them...If its a colored tone, I only like them when the color is very subtle...

All in what you like...its your hobby...you must enjoy the hobby and if the coins are ugly to you...you wont get joy from them.

and I agree... dipping is the most hypocritical subject I have found with regards to coin collecting. It seems, and I'm not pointing any fingers here, that many experienced coin folks will say one thing, and then do another.

Dipping... cleaning... its all the same to me.
'Did you clean this coin?' 'No. I dipped it.' Exsqueeze me?

Do with your coins as you please... after all, everyone else is.

and no, I think the toning on those dimes is ugly, but I would not change them by dipping or cleaning. I'd offer them up to anyone who wanted them, and their value is only worth what someone else will pay.

    good subject, thanks for sharing.

Actually I do, never liked that kind of toning either. But that is my personal taste.

That said, I am still not in favor of dipping the coins. Even though with proper dipping nobody, and I mean nobody, can say for sure that the coins were dipped except by use of deductive reasoning. So no harm is done to the coins when dipping is done properly.

It's just that I am always in favor of leaving coins alone, except to prevent additional damage, instead of trying to improve them. If you don't like them, I always found it easier, and less expensive, to just get new ones that you do like.

I wouldn't so no harm. No discriminable harm maybe. Do it enough and you'll see the harm and of cource they retone and then you can often spot differences. And then there is the inevitable collateral damage.
