Found what "appears" to be a Dime struck on a Penny planchet(?) If it's not fake (or a magician's coin) what's best/safest way to get it authenticated(?)
That coin has likely repeatedly been tapped by a spoon on the rims or by a similar utensil. Alternatively, it could've spent a prolonged period rolling around inside a dryer. Edit: I'm surprised @paddyman98 hasn't chimed in yet.
As others have stated, it looks like a "dryer coin". How can a penny planchet fit into the coining chamber for dimes? Think about it!
I think it is too symmetrical for a dryer coin or any other accidental cause. I think it was intentional abuse of some kind. But, it is post mint for sure.
Only the reverse is possible. The smaller planchet, a penny struck on a dime blank. The penny blank won't fit the dime coin slot/press/chamber.
That is interesting, I have one similar. Yeah, a washer machine wouldn't perfectly smooth the edge of a coin. I've done plenty of laundry and no coin retrieved turned out with this particular outcome effect. I'm not saying its authentic or not but definitely not the works of a washer machine.Have you sent it in for authentication yet?
This is a 1 year+ old thread and the op hasn't been around for a long time also. The op's coin is damaged and yours is most likely the same, still 10 cents.
A dryer coin gets stuck between the rotating inner drum and external stationary support drum. This causes it to tumble repeatedly in the confined space and yields the folded over rim. Here are some additional explanations https://www.error-ref.com/dryer-coins/ https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=143863 Hope this helps
