I was roll searching today, and found 2 very nice 1964d (Yeah I know they're SUPER COMMON)coins. I noticed, however, that the mint marks were on different locations on each coin. Notice how much of a space there is between the D on the first coin and monticello, compared to the small space from the D and monticello on the 2nd coin.

Any insight into this? Were there different varieties in that year?

That was at a time when the mintmark was imprinted on the die by hand using a letter punch.

If you want to look at similar variations in mintmark placement, take a look at the Kennedy half dollars from the 70's.

You can even go as late as some Lincoln Cents in the '80's... I've seen some pretty dramatic difference in punch locations and angles.
