How did the Mint replicate the dies for the gold commemorative coins they are doing this year for the 100th anniversary? Got thinking about it and was wondering how that was done.

They just make them, the same way they make any other dies. In today's world it's really rather a simple process.

I understand that, but how would they replicate the dies since the main designers have died and it was in the olden days with no computers. I am sure a computer was involved but how?

  5. One thing you could do would be to take a mint condition mercury dime and laser map it and create a 3D model from that. Use that too make the die. Piece o’ pie

Maybe that's why the dimes turned out mushy.

They must've saved hundreds of Taxpayer Dollars by not springing for a FSB template coin.
