Was at the Annapolis, MD show yesterday and looking at a beautiful MS66 Walker with an extremely fine die crack in the obv field. Does the showing of a die crack on a coin result from a crack in the die itself?
yes, the showing of a crack in the die is stamps on the coin, then which transfers the crack image to the coin ...
I was with him when he made the purchase, the die crack is on the rev. And this coin is a "killer." Worth well over the purchase price. The die crack runs completely through the rock on the rev. to the first set of lower leaves under the eagles right talons. Just above the Half Dollar on the coin. I bet you'll need sun glasses to image this one. This half stood out in the dealers case like a Super Nova!
That's where the name comes from. A crack forms in the die and when pressed onto the coin blank (planchet), a crack is formed which will be raised metal on the coin.
So, let me get this straight. You were at a show with Paddy, and he thought the Walker was a "killer". By his own admission, he noted the die crack. Now, we all know that Paddy is a knowledgeable collector, yet you didn't trust his answer about the die crack? Chris
No he never asked the question , as he was thrilled about the deal he got. I did point out the crack......and was very impressed myself with a superb strike for a later die state. The op has a good eye for coins .... as he has shared some of his finds just about every show we meet up at. He also scored a 3 legged buffalo way below par for the grade he purchased .
Yes...but my coin photo skills need work. Not sure about the sun glasses, but I think it may be worthy of a green bean. Thanks again Paddy.
not at all...240.00...when I am shopping/bidding on Walkers, I use a little formula I have tested...I take the slab price guide (in this case 375.00) and multiply by .55 to .67 depending on the coin and grade. So I got it at 375.00 x .64 = 240.00
Most should agree when imaging a high luster coin or proof surfaces it's very difficult to get a good image. Unless you have a good set up to shed light the coin with out the back flash. You did very well....on the price. Nice score.
A combination of watching prices on hundreds of Walkers, what they actually sold for vs the BIN price and the greysheet prices. I don't always get the coin in that price range, and have, of course, paid more for some. (Cited from: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/die-cracks-simple-question-i-think.271331/)
