When I get to work tomorrow I will try to find an example to post. What I am saying is a die clash can LOOK both raised and sunken in on the coin. The dbl. clash LOOKS raised behind the pillar design.
Any one who thought it was not as clash needs some BASIC instruction.

I don't have a clue how VAM-3A even got into this discussion about a simple die clas on a Memorial cent. Now let's all try to play nice.
Keep calm...and stop calling people names. I'm not a know it all, just an experienced professional numismatist. This is basic stuff. I'm really afraid we have confused the heck out of the original OP. Anyone bother to explain to her what a VAM is? What a counter clash is...NO. Just muddy the waters in an attempt to sound informed. Then we get absurd opinions about a scraped die, etc.

Is it any wonder that a poster thinks he is dealing with some clueless base ball card collectors who know nothing about coins!

Instead of leaving threads and getting angry, answer the questions being raised. I'm going to look into VAM-3A to advance my own knowledge later this week. I'm also going to post photos of some die clashes. This should be unnecessary since there is a very good example in the OP.

One final thought...never mind, its late.

Thank you for the information. I just looked it up and I am in the process of reading it. Very interesting things posted here tonight. I have a lot of studying to do.

It does not look like either one of these. It is very smooth, no lines in it.

Question? Do you own any Morgan dollars with a line into the field at the junction of neck and chin? Do you have any with two offset lines there? I think you believe they are evidence of 2 separate times the dies came together w/o a planchet between them, right?

When you say parallel die clash, do you mean EXACTLY lined up perfectly with a space between them or do you allow for a degree of offset as I do and still call them parallel. I am thinking that we are in total agreement about the OP of a double clash rev. and what a double clash mark looks like on any coin. Am I correct about your views?

Or...When "we KNOW they're not parallel" is it because of the offset and sometimes very slight degree of rotation that is often seen?

Yes they are. Do we know each other?

I'm also cross-eyed from looking at coins for fifty-five years and seven hours a day for over forty of them! ::)

It appears to be par for the course on CT and you'll get skewered and called a Know-it-all when you try to educate/correct/discuss/disagree!:bookworm:

I have had all I am going to take of your condescending attitude. As far as I'm concerned, you are a troll whose agenda is to disrupt the smooth operation of this forum, and I would not be surprised if you are a sockpuppet for an existing member.

You are an enemy of numismatics. You make it difficult to teach the truth with your plausible-but-misleading BS - and that's what it is because you plainly know better and are deliberately distorting fact.

I'm not Admin here, obviously, and can't act directly (I'd sure like to see where else I can find your IP :) ), but you can rest assured that you will not be allowed to spread this crap unchallenged. I will not allow you to deceive people just beginning to learn numismatics.

    What's a sock puppet? What's an IP?

I'm going to post a photo of a coin with a die clash that is both raised and incuse on a coin and invite your comments.

Please quote one or two words of "crap" I have posted.

What you "take" as a condescending attitude is an effort to keep things simple for the "beginners." You and I agree with the cause of the OP. A simple double die clash. I feel a bunch of posters got way off track here and confused a lot of folks. I don't have the time right now BUT if one of you would take the time to explain what happens when two dies clash and what it looks like on a coin (you obviously know) it would help the OP rather than fuss at me.

Now, when you get a chance, DON'T FORGET to back up your opinion and

Here it is... Nice die clash with RAISED LETTERS on an INCUSE face. You might wish to comment on the "lines" running thru the design onto the field too. I know you know; but since I am a condescending know-it-all spewing out crap, no one will believe anything I think. Anyway, a bunch of posters on CT are saying this gold dollar suffers from PMD because no one has taken the time to explain what a coin looks like when it is struck with a planchet that is scratched (from whatever - it's not important here).

Thanks SuperDave! Hope I can bring you to the "Dark Side" ...LOL. The sock puppet (?) has me under mind control.

So Chris...are you saying this is not a die clash?

Bye the way, I have not heard "Barf ..." since grade school. How old are you?

Just looked up VAM-3C. I agree with you that the clash is not raised. So what. It is a simple clash. There is no design on a Morgan dollar die that can RAISE a design like the gold dollar I posted for you to see that the letters are raised and the face image is incuse. Both VAM-3C and the gold dollar are COMMON die clashes - only stronger than most. Agree?
