    Is that a less prominent die chip at the end of the second S of STATES? This coin appears to have been struck with tired obverse and reverse dies. Who knows if the die pair was used exclusively together?

    What's this called? Looks to me like a member of the Charles Barber hate club chipped his initials off that die lol.

    Funny that it does appear over the initials though...

    Perhaps not a coincidence? Weakness in the die from applying the initials leads to a higher risk of deterioration?

    Is it possible that it is a blob of solder? That’s an odd place for a die chip when taking die geometry and stress concentrations into consideration.

    It also looks like it’s on the coin, not a part of it.
