Well, I too hate what the Weather Channel is now/has become based on what it could have been without ads, marketing and branding. I think ABC News recently had a Nightline story about the spread of The Weather Channel over the past 15 or so years into all major media and cable networks and further into some 18mm US households. They aren't selling the weather as much as the premise of weather that people have learned to tune in to before running out of the house. Once lured in to that regular ritual, the commercials and little logos for brands you see on the top of the local reports for products are hard at work on the consumer within the viewer. The Weather Channel keeps testing the boundaries of what they can do to get more viewers by trying to offer programming related to weather, 'How Weather Changed History", "Storm Stories", etc. They have turned the 'Weather Man' or 'Weather Girl' into a Hurricane uber-brute who can stand in the face of doom and gloom and sell you cold medicine or auto insurance.

Maybe you can turn your father onto NOAA.gov or a really fun one, Wunderground.com, which has really great customizeable radar maps and live tracking over zoom-able Google Maps. Try to ween him off The Weather Channel, because it's making him sick and he needs a return to the purity of raw atmospheric data! It's out there, it's online, where do you think The Weather Channel gets it from? The first link above primarily. :thumb:
