Well....#1....they don't grade....and #2...you can trust them...I know him and some of the members know him also....he is a great guy! Speedy
If you read about it you will see that they reseach the coin for varieties .....maybe a person doesn't have the VAM book but thinks he has one or maybe a new one...he sends it to them and they look it up and look to see if its a new one... Speedy
The guy who developed & runs VamSlab is one of the most highly respected and recognized experts there is when it comes to Morgan varieties - John Baumgart. Most folks who use his service don't care what the grade of the coin is - they only want to have the variety attributed correctly and authenticated.
That is AWESOME! Now if you used his service for a coin, would PCGS or another top Grading service take his findings into account?
Well i remember being someone gave me a link showing that Anacs would Grade based on your Private research for a certain fee, just didn't know if PCGS would. Considering how well known John is, I would hope they would.
What they do is...you send in what you think it is....then ANACS goes and looks it up....if it is right then they will put it on the slab...but if they don't agree it is left off the slab. Speedy
That's exactly what happened to me last year. Sent in a 1925-P Peace dollar and marked it VAM 14. I was wrong. They sent it back graded, but not attributed. I sent it to Leroy. It was a new die state (LDS) of a known VAM and he updated the VAM description. I sent in some coins a few days ago. I noticed the submission form had some new wording. You pay $5 for them to verify the submitter's VAM designation, and it takes an extra 5 days for verification. "If your attribution is incorrect and ANACS has to research it, the price is an additional $5 per coin.". Not sure how they decide if they will research it or not?
Thanks Speedy! Hi NESVT, good to hear from you again I just know that when I send this Morgan in, I am going to give them all the time they need to research. No quick return. I guess the best VAM variety to send in on this one is VAM 20. One more question, Is there a limit or standard on the Magnification they use in establishing the Grade and Variety?
Normaly graders use the un-aided eye to grade....if they see something they might use something like a 5x....and for variety I think the most used is 10x... Speedy
I just can't help myself! Here is a link to see some of my (UP CLOSE) pics of this Morgan. o.k having a ahrd time getting link, please bare with me
I have no Idea! If I sell to the right collector, 300....350.....3000 All I know is I will never sell it unless I have to. It will go to my Daughter. Nice to hear from you KOKOBELLIES:hail:
Like I told ya... I am a newbie in the numis world! My dad collected coins and had a ton of Benjamins, old Qs, Mercs and my mom gave 'em to my older bro, and he squandered 'em! Pity! That's basically how my interest was piqued as a kid! If I think about it, I'll bring some of my coins to work and let you take a look at 'em! Catch ya on the obverse! Mark
