It looks suspiciously like a cast piece to me, but I'll defer to those with more experience.

I wouldn't get your hopes too high, but then again, some of this 18th century stuff can be a bit crudely made, and if it spent some time buried or submerged, that could account for the rough surfaces, so...

    I'd lay odds it's fake, but ... ?

It is a copy for sure, no doubt. It is a replica of a pattern coin of which there is only one known.

Oh. Izzat so? If so, I reckon that clinches it. I knew there were some rare Nova patterns but didn't know how rare.

I've owned two low grade real examples (of the more commonly encountered copper types, of course.)

Photos are out of focus, but it appears to be a copy of the Mark. Definitely a crude copy.

Yup, the imported copper coins are pretty common, but there were a few pattern coins made in the US. This is a copy of one of the patterns.

It could be worth over 20 grand or it could be fake, send it in to pcgs to find out.

So through I have never sent a coin to pcgs and I do not know if it is real or fake: How much do you think it will cost ?

You can wait for more opinions or show it to a coin dealer, but it is fake. Please don't be too hasty to send it in to be certified. I don't claim to be an expert, but have collected Colonial coins for over 45 years. There is no chance that coin is genuine.

I vote fake ( copy) also. If you bought it , I would ask for refund, if gifted to you, just hang on to it , over the years of wondering and hoping can power enthusiasm for learning more. Jim

Definitely a cast copy. You can see the seam on the edge.

Thanks guys. So yeah I thought it would be to good to be true. I bought this coin in a big lot and payed 10 cent for it... So nothing lost. But on the otherhand I do not need it and would like to sell it in classifieds. Would it be fair to value it at 30$, declaring it is a cast copy ? Or is this amount quite to high ?

30 bucks is pretty steep for a copy. A few bucks though, maybe.

For a ten-cent bulk find, it's not bad.

I would think $30 very high, $5 or less would be about it.

A new trend is slabbed fake coins. Whether they bring more than the slab fees I don't know. I have accumulated fake coins for decades from dealers junk boxes and will eventually buy a DANSCO 7070 to house a type set of them.
