1886 Indian Head cent. A slight change in the engraving occurred. Between 1859 thru mid-1886 the last feather of the headdress points between the I and C (Variety I). From mid-1886 thru 1909 the last feather points between the C and the A. So be it. Variety I... Variety II... Pre-1886 (same as Variety I)... Post-1886 (same as Variety II)...
I have to post this one. It's the only "old Proof gold coin" I have in my collection. The Type III gold dollars have the highest Proof mintages of any gold coin from 1884 to 1889. It is my understanding that jewelers liked to use them in their creations. The Proof mintage for the 1883 gold dollar was 207. After that the mintages exceeded 1,000 per year. That is high for old (pre 1933) Proof gold.
That one came from the only full roll of Morgans that I ever found. I have it's sister VAM or later die stage, from the same roll. Look at the lips and nose, there is a distinct clash.
The 1880 gold dollar has a mintage of 1,600, but with about 950 survivors, it's not as rare as it might seem. It's long been popular because of the low mintage. Just about all of them are P-L.
I've had this beauty for 40+ years. Need to slow this thread down. Would like to see more than 1 coin per year.
I have been drawn to 20 cents pieces since high school. This 1876 is not the most valuable one I have, but it is the best preserved example in my collection.
