Wikipedia says Virtus was the deity of bravery and military strength, the personification of the Roman virtue of virtus (valor, manliness, excellence, courage, character, and worth). The Greek equivalent deity was Arete. (edit) All the coin sites call the pole Virtus is holding a spear. Wikipedia says Virtus' object is usually a javelin. Most examples I saw online seem to lack a pointy end. The few that do have the point down.
