    As an example of a coin smoothed into a standard weight I offer this Ptolemaic example of Lorber CPE-B565 (Sv-1491, pl li, 10; SNG-Cop-246):

    This is the coin (weight) mentioned in Lorber's write up as "A specimen almost completely smoothed in antiquity, leaving only traces of the face of Isis ..."

    I bought this for a pittance believing that it was a damnatio of Licinius. (We do know Constantine issued a DM for him.) The scratches are only on the obverse and are patinized, indicating that the defacement occurred in antiquity. But we can only speculate; we can never know for sure. But it seems someone didn't like Licinius.
