Saw this article on the Asylum, clicked a link in it to view more photos. A fellow coin collector who's entire book case fell and could have nearly killed him. Crazy! http://numisbooks.dk/info/Reolvaeltning201303.htm
and?>>>> this guy could my clone..as far as living arrangements and i don't have that many books, but loaded with antiques and artifacts and other stuff.
Well many times I've heard from the wife....if you bring another coin book home" I'll Kill You" so........if by chance I'm missing in action...... you can count on this..... In the library , with a candle stick holder, and of course "the wife". You they always say "the wife" did it....
Been a record collector, this is very real. Any stash of heavy items on a shelf can be a major disaster. It's part of the reason I keep most of my art books, statues and heavier things on the lower shelves or on a table.
I think I have some 15.000 books, but many of them are very thin. Maybe 200 are coin books (many of these very thick).
I can sympathize as well. I used to work in a library and saw too many injuries when free-standing bookshelves were not properly stabilized. Books are heavy! I have 19 bookcases in my house, but I bolt them to the walls.
@ancientone and @ancientcoinguru are right. Sturdier shelves, anchored to the walls. The photos showed his new anchoring system.
When I moved 9 years ago a friend who was helping me move made the following observation "Words to live by...never move an academic"
I am by far no academic, but through nearly 70 years I have accumulated a tremendous weight in books. My eldest has his Masters and my youngest a PhD, and I have a lot of their books and research materials. I know it's nice to hold a book in hand, but lately I've gotten to like my Kindle. Easier to read for my older eyes, and much lighter to keep in my hand for extended periods. Maybe I'm just gettin' lazy in my golden years.
I quite often use my IPAD to read mainstream books. It is great for a trip on a plane...very easy to pack. I do not think it is laziness at all, it is just easier and more convenient. Unfortunately, most of what I read is specialized and so it is not available as an e-book.
