I agree with what others have posted. The company you bought them from may not be overly confident that a TPG would agree with their grading. That coupled with the fact that you bought sight unseen makes it worse. You've already heard all of this though.

In the shop I work at if it's a tougher date or we feel it's really choice we send it to a TPG. Usually NGC but also PCGS and ANACS. It gives us more confidence as well as the buyer. It's not only slabbed at that point but you can see it for yourself.

We sell raw as well but never label a coin MS63 or MS64 etc. Even though we are a shop we are not a TPG. Most of our coins aren't even priced.
You like it, my boss gives a price and if you like the price you buy it.

The vast majority of my coins are raw. I bought most of them in person to person contact and paid what I considered a fair price.

The few times I have bought from a "large dealer" sight unseen I was carefull to check return policies and if they had restocking fees. I sent a few back for being overgraded.

Study the coins that you collect and do business in person when possible.

I fully agree. In fact, for the first time ever I purchased a couple coins online with no picture just today. The dealer had the coins listed and their grades and I decided to go for it. The only reason I did so (and I mean only) was that a well known and respected member of this forum specifically recommend this dealer to me. I have never personally dealt with this dealer before...but I figured that members experience was good enough. So, the coins are on their way and we will see how they look when they get here.

On the positive side, they gave you a reference to how they use the terms. It does not matter what Choice or Gem means outside the dealer. They said what it means to them.

If you trust thier grading on the MS61-63 range then there is nothing to worry about. On the other hand if you are not sure, it is better to study the series and stick to already graded coins until you are more comfortable.

I was one of those folks who thought he could be the system and I ended up spending the last several years learning from my mistakes and would do things very differently if I could do it all over again.

Why they suggest not having a coin graded? Same reason a used car salesman doesn't want you to take one of thier cars to a machanic for an inspection.

Pretty much. The dealer should stand behind their grades...if they are telling you not to submit the coins they sell to a TPG, that would be a big red flag to me.
