The status finally changed to "Grading/Encapsulation/Imaging"...we are at 32 business days though on an original estimate of 15...
Well grades finally arrived! It was a bit of a letdown. All of these are moderns and I expected a few 70s and the rest to be 69s. Only one of the six ended up being a 70 (the Austrian 2024 niobium coin). Then there were four 69s and one 68. The 68 is the most puzzling of the bunch. NGC has not graded one that low (all the rest in their census are 69 and 70) and this was a coin that looked problem free and was still in its original undisturbed mint packaging. I had prescreened all of these and actually took one coin out initially since it had issues that I figured would prevent a decent grade.
Dang! It's a mystery sometimes what goes on in those grading rooms! I'm my submissions, I just cross my fingers for straight graded coins!
Get the #9 Italian Night Club® Sub when you're at JJ, you won't be sorry. Tell them to hold the mayonaise, though, mayo doesn't belong on Italian sandwiches. My grandma would cuss them out from here to Abruzzo, if they put it on hers.
I handed these coins in at the FUN Convention and the times quoted then were significantly less than they are now at 45 days. Giving some leeway for holidays I don't know about, I guess my 45 days are about up. A number of these coins are early hammered ex-hoards and I am expecting some "details" grades of "cleaned". I don't think the graders differentiate between what I would call "conserved" and "cleaned" because if you pull something out of a hole in the ground where it has laid for 400 years , you are bound to have an element of detritus attached to the coin. I have seen some hoard coins in shiny condition because they were protected by the coins around them. I also entered 8 Morgan dollars and dependent on how they come back, this may be my first and last grading submission. 16/07/2024 25 10,650 WORLD - STANDARD Scheduled for Grading 16/07/2024 1 300 WORLD - ECONOMY Grading/Encapsulation/Imaging 16/07/2024 8 1,400 ECONOMY Grading/Quality Control
Very true! With "older" coins a straight grade is often what I'm after too but with moderns, it's another story.
It is odd indeed. I would think there would need to be something noticeable to the eye to get down to 68.
I did notice that many of the wait times have increased since I sent my order in. Either NGC is getting more coins in, fewer employees working, or a combination of the two. As far as conserved vs cleaned, it depends on the process and the end result. Some coins can be conserved and then straight grade. Others are improperly conserved. And then there are those that just can't be helped (especially if they have been in the ground long enough for the surfaces to be degraded.
