These are the sort of tips I was looking for.

I think you talked me into those S-mints.
I was thinking if I went with O-mints, I could keep it cheaper, but the S-mints look so much better as you mention, and the prices aren't bad in that year range.

1885 is a pretty easy year to find some really, really nice O's. One of the few years that New Orleans actually struck their coins fantastically.

My DMPL O will be an 1885.

 

Plus many of the S mint coins will be very high quality for a cheap price.

 

The 1895 example according to the price list quoted would be the high ticket item. Why the 1895 s is more than the o must be because of survivors, or some collect san francisco mint coins to create more demand.

 

I appreciate all the tips and pointers.

I think I am going to have to hold off on this set for a while.

I have several modern sets underway at the moment, and coin money is tighter than anytime in the past.
Therefore taking this on is not in the cards for now.
