I am agreeing with @zumbly : @Curtisimo You really captured some wonderful iconic Ancients this year... you kind of snuck in with some fantastic coins! I am really jonesin' on your Top 5 and the Siliqua... those would definitely be targets for me! Well done! I will toss in some Lysimachos just get in on the fun! Great collection you acquired over 2017 Curtisimo, like the Tets from Athens Lysimachos and Ptolemy best. I noticed that many Ptolemys the first also have a counterstamp on the observe , no idear about the scratches on the reverse , mine also has both, although it looks more as actually writing on the reverse and a little owl as counterstamp.
BONUS ROUND Question for @Curtisimo : What were Alegandron's 3 VOTES for your Top 10? Random Bogus Hint: INDIA Gandhara 6-5C BCE AR Shana or 1-8 Shatamana 15mm 1.4g Six armed Taxila symbol pellet between - Blank - Pieper 12 Rajgor Series 41
Amazing coins Curtisimo. I especially enjoyed your write-up and praises for Antoninus Pius who is undoubtedly a blazing light of justice during the long history of the empire.
I'm drooling over each coin you posted...and I always love your writing style combined with such fascinating content!! The first three (#'s 1-3) are my favorites and would be at the top of my favorites list as well I'll pile on with..... Antiochus VII; Ptolemy II and the 'Carthaginians in Sicily':
Ah FUN! I love games. Okay... I'll go with the following as your votes: Anonymous Denarius - this one is a given considering that you and I share the same interest in this time period. Persian Siglos - two reasons. 1) Because of your amazing Daric I know you share an interest in this historical time period and this type. 2) I think your indian stamped coin is a hint since these siglos are often found stamped with Indian counter-stamps! Ptolemy I Soter tet - this is a toss up for me between this and Lysimachus but I went with this because I know you have an example and you are also interested in the Delta Engraver. Was I right?
Nice additions Mikey. I think your Antiochos VIII will always have my vote as the best portrait of this ruler I have ever seen and your Ptolemy has excellent toning and I love the shield symbol on the reverse... interesting! Your Punic is great also... you just always pick winners is the point I'm trying to make Thanks Mike! A. Pius is one of my favorite emperors and you can often find his coins in beautiful shape
Great example! It does appear that these two things are very common on even the best of examples of this type... counter stamp and graffito (post mint writing). I will need to do some more research into this because I find it very interesting. Thanks for sharing your example and point that out.
WELL DONE! The Hint was Random... I highlited AR in bold...narrowed your search to 8 coins... LOL, this scares me. You know more of my collecting habit than BLUE (my avatar) does! Well, as Drew Carey would say: Congrats on the BONUS Round, you get 11,010 points. I keep this old beat up sestertius of his next to my computer as a touchstone of sorts. It is worn so all it says is 'Antoninus Aug Pius" and "Indulgentia" - the Compassionate one on the reverse:
What an awesome dekanomismata! I think I would order them much as you have, the only positions I'm uncertain about are 5, 6, & 7... I might have shuffled those around a bit. Also 2 & 3 (sounds like those were a virtual tie for you anyway). I think I'm probably biased on #1 after having seen it as your avatar for a few months... I associate it with the good feeling of seeing a new Curtisimo post up! Congrats on a stellar year!!! I'll contribute a favourite siliqua of Valens (Arles) and a (non-purple) A. Pi denarius I also got this year:
Thank you SA for both the nice words and your contributions to the thread. Wow to that Antoninus Pius Denarius. It may not be purple but it's still superb Now when do we get to see SA's top 15? We are all dying here!!
You're too kind! But, erm... am I allowed to wait 'til after Christmas? Work is interfering with coining time! (Plus I still have my portraits list and my IHBFCT list. I will tell you that my top 15 will include 4 I've never posted...)
Awesome coins @Curtisimo! #1,2 and 5 are my favorites and the Doicletian #6 with the sweet gold colored silvering!
Alright now you're just going to have to explain to this work thingy that if it doesn't stop interfering with coin time then it's got to go! I had to post my list before Christmas since I'm headed home for the holidays and will be 100% mobile till after the 1st. I look forward to seeing your new stuff and I'm interested to see how your portraits list will turn out
@Curtisimo, your selection is of course excellent, but the way you present them is fascinating : nice pictures, funny, documented and informative writeups. Add to this your creativity and humor at starting new games and contests almost every month...Having you here is a real treat Thank you my friend Q
A fantastic top 10 @Curtisimo! My three favourites are 9, 8 and 3. I love that Lysimachos... maybe next year I can grab one. Here's a Antiochos VII tet I also have a Tyre mint tet but it was struck under Demetrios II maybe I can get one of Antiochos VII next year too.
