About 2 years ago a local auction company ran ads for a coin collection for sale. The auction was on a Sat night and viewing was only on Friday only. The auction company was in an OK area during the day and and a iffy area at night. I went Friday and the Numismatist plan out told me he had been working non stop and a few of the lots he was unable to really look at. Boxes of rolled cents, proof sets that were unopened from the 50's and 60's, a 16lb bag of Buffalo Nickels, etc My son loves Buffalos so he went with me Sat Night. I "won" 2 of the cent lots where there were roll after roll of common wheat cents...but underneath were rolls and rolls of unc cents from the mid 40's to the late 60's. I got a great deal as it took my son and myself just to lift the boxes into my trunk of the car. I bought a lot of Washington quarters and nothing Great. A couple of Commeratives and still no great ones, missed out on the proof sets as we ran out of money on the bag of Buffalos. My son asked if we could bid but was short of money we set a limit as he figured out how many nickels there were in 16 lbs. He was going to help sell or work off the amount I loaned him. It bid up and after our limit was hit it and I did one more bid and we "won" the lot. We got it home and we found a 1913S type II VG right away a lot of mint marked ones in the teens and earlier 20's some with problems as we are in the San Fransico Bay Area close to the bay. we found quite a few two feathers and a couple of mint errors. We looked through all the coins as the bag had the early ones on the top and later ones on the bottom. We went to 1926s and found two that slabbed VF. Sold one on Teletrade along with a few of the others in the teens and twenties. We got enough to pay for the whole lot. The big bag got put away as my son's sport was coming up, then I changed jobs, then spring then summer then his sport again. 3 weeks ago we got the bag out and started to look through it again. We got several XF's from 1927 to 1931 then got some unc in 2X2's from 1934 on. We did not get a 1936D 3 1/2 leg but looked then we started on the 37's and 38's. I gave my son the bag of 37's and I took the 38's as that bag had several coins in 2X2"s. I told to him look for the the three legger. About one minute later he said Dad I think I got one. Sure enough it had the markers and was a solid Vf. My wife came in and asked what we boys were laughing about. I told her and she said that was Great! Wow! Find some more. About two minutes later he said Dad I think I have another one! Better than the first one! WOW! We were laughing and my wife came in and said WOW you guys are sure having fun. I finished my pile maybe one 38 D/S, which I did not mention. He got real quite and in a soft voice said Dad I have one more! It was close to XF! We got them back from ICG yesterday and got VF30, VF35 and VF35 one could have gone XF40 but it is what it is. I read that ICG conserves the coins that come in for the basic slabbing fee. One of the three had a little crud on the edge and they made it look great. Nice Job ICG. I put them on my son's desk before he got home from school. Then they disappeared. I asked him what he was going to do and he said save them. I think he owes me some more work around the house!
