I don't recall seeing this on any 51-D cents. Don't think it's a die chip. Looks like damage - see the digits and the MM
It could be, but I doubt it's damage. Yes, the coin is beat up pretty bad, but the anomaly is raised and there's no obvious source from the surrounding copper that would account for it.
Either way , look it's not worth much . Die chip or otherwise . Hate to be the one to break it to you .
I have no idea what it is caused by. That's why I posted it - to get opinions. I meant no disrespect - just that the damage opinion (at least PMD) does not make sense to me.
The bottom half of that 5 has taken a hit. It’s much lower than the rest of the 5 and the others numbers to the field.
And the verdict is.... "a well known die chip" per an expert at Coneca. I'm told that there are more extreme versions that are even more impressive. I've researched a bit more and can't find it documented but I'm sure it's out there. No idea if it has any value, but probably a small amount. It's a keeper either way! Thanks for everyone's feedback!
