I would like a billion dollars in my bank account. Now hopefully I'll sit back and watch it roll in! Guy
For some reason, just right now, I got an email from entitled "Mail Delivery System Failure". It states that my Congressman's email is not valid.
Very true and sometimes the committees have rejected all the submitted designs and they have also been very vocal about the poor quality of designs that they have been presented with and theyhave called for improved designs as well. The CFA and CCAC are on our side, but they are usually being asked to pick the best mud.
I know this is a bit off subject, and I know people have claimed we will never see a paper denomination larger than $100 again. But is there any chance we could lobby for U.S. $200, $500, and possibly $1,000 bills? ($1,000 bills might be pushing it though) And another thing, could we lobby for a redesign of the $1 and $2 bills? Or maybe even lobby for a U.S. $2 COIN?
A few of the ideas are possibilities, even in the near future. The $2 coin would not do that well, probably not even as good as the $1 coins, and the $1 coins did horrible in commerce themselves! Also, with the $200, $500, and $1,000 bank notes; I think those could possibly be issued if inflation spiked up quite a bit. The redesigning of the $1 bill I could see happening soon, but due to the fact that two dollar bills are usually only kept as curiosities or in collections now a days, I bet they will never be redesigned.
coinmaster1: I hope you are wrong about them never redesigning the $2 bill. I always figured that, if they ever did redesign the $1 bill, they'd do the $2 as well, or if they did the $2, they'd do the $1, but thats just my guess. I really think we have better luck at getting the $2 bill redesigned, as Congress always puts wording into the Treaury Appropreations Bill every fiscal year to prohibit the redesign of the $1 bill. I'd really like to see some type of half dollar coin series, just like what they are doing with the dollar and quarter dollar rigt now. That might pull the half a little ways out of oblivion for a while, as people would want to collect and hoard them. Think of the design detail they could put on such a large coin.
I'm all for the change, and I signed the petition. I'll be sending a letter Senator Enzi tomorrow, I mow his lawns in the summer so at least I won't be talking to a total stranger... I also put it up on The Facebook, so if you see a bunch of Wyoming people sign the bill.... you're welcome However I do like the shield reverse of the penny they did... I vote we keep that one
I vote we save the taxpayers some money and eliminate the $1 bill, then redesign the $2 bill. Then maybe the $1 coin and $2 bill will actually circulate.
Yes, but is there any hopes to get the half, or fifty cent piece circulating again? *sigh* Probably not. But how about we do that on this petition. Get on the bandwagon to eliminate $1 bills, redesigning the $2 bill, and possibly finding a way to get halves circulating again. Perhaps a half series like the various quarter and dollar coin series? If people would not for for my "Famous Dogs Half Dollar Coin Act" why not just a redesign series for the reverse of the half with famous buildings and monuments such as the White House, Capital Building or Washington Monument? Or something like that? I don't care what anyone else thinks. The half is a good, useful denomination, and I think it deserves a chance at circulating again. Hey! Let's petition to get rid of the cent as well as the $1 bill, THEN we can circulate the way more useful, half. The half deserves to circulate more than the lowly one cent coin, if you ask me.
This is the first time I've seen this thread because I was offline for three weeks in the course of moving. While I applaud your effort, I feel that your letter comes across in a condescending manner, somewhat demanding and presumptuous. You must get rid of the "otherwise known as" garbage. You're not corresponding with someone from a remote tribe on Borneo. Use the "KISS" system, "Keep It Simple Stupid"! Our coins are the cent, nickel, dime, quarter dollar, half dollar and dollar. I doubt that there is a single congressional representative who doesn't know about them. Your closing, "Please respond accordingly", sounds too much like a demand rather than a plea for help. What do you propose to do if they don't respond? Just as important, you've offered to provide Coin Talk as a forum for these discussions. Have you discussed this with Peter and the others? If you haven't, I think you should because you are giving the impression that they are endorsing your efforts. Furthermore, what makes you think that using this site, or any other for that matter, would be a better alternative to the CCAC? In previous discussions, here, there has never been a consensus of opinion about which designs would be best. We would be in the same "boat" as the CCAC, and llittle would be accomplished. You must realize that if you are going to have any chance of arousing interest in your ideas, you have to provide these representatives with alternative ideas rather than cite the length of time a portrait has been on a coin without change. Do you have a preference for allegorical designs? Do you think it's time to put some other dead president on them? You've got to give them something concrete that will stick in their minds. Otherwise, you will likely receive a response to your correspondence thanking you for you concerns and it will be in "File 13" before a congressional aide can even get the free postage stamped on the return envelope. I'm not trying to put you down, Taylor, but there are many more things you should have considered before sending something like this to your representative. Chris
