Great coins and cool pictures of Jerusalem @Orielensis . I also enjoyed a stroll around this historic landmark. How crazy would it be if you and I were standing right next to each other when we took our almost identical pictures :snaphappy:

    When were you in Jerusalem?

Nice Manuel I Alegandron. He played a big role in protecting the crusader state of Antioch during the reign of Bohemond III.

Thanks for the kind words Steve :)

Nice coins @FitzNigel . The bare head deniers are both interesting and frightening at the same time. If you listed it as cave troll bust right I don’t think I’d be able to argue. :wacky::D

But the one you got is a dandy! Truly a coin that depicts a man you do not want to mess with!

No one on the planet has the funds to accumulate all of their coin desires, esp. with the way auction prices/trends are going:( and going and going......kinda like the "Eveready Bunny";)

Well, I guess this is what happens if you stumble into a forum of ancient and medieval coin enthusiasts! When have you been to Jerusalem, @seth77 and @Curtisimo?

Actually, I just arrived back two days ago. Instead of feasting on turkey, my wife and me went on a history nerd trip to Israel for Thanksgiving. Some of our family members might have doubted our sanity for it, but we had a true blast of a time.

We were last summer following the Third Crusade route and some of the northern Israel National Trail before going to Abu Ghosh and Jerusalem around July.

    Love the coin @Curtisimo

As to the Monty Python reference...I have been to the castle in Scotland where the movie was shot. It is called Doune castle.

Did they “faart in your general direction”, and call you “an increment of feces” at the castle?
LOL, there were some great lines in that movie!

Beautiful photos guys. I was there a few years back but it is still cool to know that we have all been standing in pretty much the exact same spot with a similar appreciation for the history of the place. Here’s another photo where I was standing pretty much in exactly the place you were almost exactly 3 years later!

It was neat to see the remains Roman camp.

Interesting observation. The artistic representations seem to show a really tall helmet as well. Maybe additional room for padding to dampen a blow from above?

Haha super cool Andrew! I’m glad the French didn’t pelt you with a Trojan bunny and various poultry. Now I’ll have to visit there someday.

Nice coin. I love the mounted knight. I’ll have to put one of these on my want list.

VD76's coins are specialist picks. Those knight to the right types are 1163 "experimental types" possibly the first "helmeted" deniers minted.

Is it known whether these were minted by Bohemind III or could they have been minted earlier?

Yes , helmeted deniers started to mint around 1163 , during Bohemond III regime . And continued up to 1252 , Bohemond V .
    Bohemond III 1163 - 1201
    Bohemond IV 1201 - 1216 first regime
    Raymond Roupen 1216 - 1219
    Bohemond IV 1219 - 1233 second regime
    Bohemond V 1223 - 1252
All of the Bohemonds ( III IV V) deniers have very similar legends and the only difference is the style.
You can easily spot Raymond deniers by the style and the legend R:V: P:I:N:V:Z , but they are pretty scarce

Here are my Bohemond deniers . The first three are in the top roll I bought from C.J.Sabine . Two of the first ones is from 'Roupen' hoard and the plate coins in Marcus Phillips 'The Roupen hoard of Helmet pennies of Antioch', Numismatic Chronicle 2005, pp 249-276 . Plate 30 - 27 and plate 34 - 331.

The second coin is Bohemond III or IV .

The sixth coin is Bohemond IV
