If it's a 64 I'd leave it alone and consider myself lucky!

I use the same method for both types. PCGS is much easier. Use a pair of pliers to break the corner furthest from the coin. Then carefully pry the slab apart with a small flat screwdriver (don't get in near the coin). If you do this patiently you can work from side to side and the slab splits on its welds and you can get the coin out. Do this over a soft surface.

Personally I would have left it alone but since you've already proceeded to the re-grade process--Good Luck.
Oh, do keep us up-to-date when it returns; hopefully you won't receive a "cleaned" tag on it.

I agree not sure why you wouldn't just send the coin back to PCGS as they also offer http://www.pcgs.com/restoration/ services. Point out the issue and let them deal with it versus cracking it out and basically assuming all risk and liability on the coin.

It was MS64. It will re-grade. I have faith in the coin and my dealer.

And in a way it's been reviewed and restored by PCGS. The guy that removed the residue worked for them. :)

Wait, you have a former pcgs employee doing your simple acetone work? That's awesome

I recommended he let me do it and take the risk, he volunteered to keep me out of trouble as long as I agreed not to hold him liable if it came back with a Details grade. I found a great local dealer that cares about the success of their customers, and he's earned my trust. Yes, it's awesome. :)

this is my tool of choice, when I want to do some damage to a plastic slab.
