I was watching an auction tonight on Great Collections and was amazed with the finial price it sold at. http://www.greatcollections.com/Coin/270376/1973-D-Kennedy-Half-Dollar-DDO-FS-101-FS-148-PCGS-MS-66 I mean WOW! $ 2,300 + ten percent buyers fee ($230) + postage / handling = roughly $ 2,550. If the winning bidder wants to use this coin in his / hers’ registry set then they are going to have to send it back into PCGS for reholdering and variety attribution which is going to cost postage / insurance to PCGS, $10 application fee, $12 reholder fee, $18 variety attribution fee and a minimum $28.95 for return postage and insurance (minimum additional total of $68.95). When it is all said and done, this coin will equal the PCGS MS66 1973-D FS-101 that my dad picked up for me a few years ago (close up photo can be seen in the Cherrypickers’ Guide 5th Edition volume II on page 321) for $60.00.
Why would they need to send it back to PCGS? The CPG attribution is already on the insert, isn't it? Chris
Because currently the coin sits in a tomb graded as a "Mint Error". If you read the rules at PCGS: http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/rules.aspx The MINT ERROR section explains this.
Because it is their rules. Coins graded under the MINT ERROR program are not allowed in competitive sets.
Here is a photo of the doubling on TRUST from my 73D DDO-001. An interesting thing with the 73D DDO-001 is there is a clash on the Stage B (MDS) obverse, which disappears on the Stage C (LDS), and is not on the Stage A (EDS). You can see the clash on the $2300 half dollar that Caleb posted from an auction. Larry Nienaber
Mr. Nienaber, Thanks for posting the pictures, they will help people identify this variety. I'm still amazed at what the finial price realized was on this auction! Caleb
