We have all talked about & alot of us here have cracked a coin out of its slab. What I am wondering is how do YOU go about doing it ? I usually use tile cutting snips on PCGS & NGC coins & on ANACS & PCI I just hit the holder on the seam with the edge of my snips & it pops open 90% of the time. So how do you do it ? I equate cracking a slab to opening a coconut is the jungle - They're a Bit** to get open but most of the time the reward is sweet & worth it.
AHHH ...one of my favorite tools. When I was a rigger I had my Cresent wrench modified with the end ground down to a flat head screw driver / wedge & a sharpend groove for cutting rope & wire on the handle .In addition to that the back screw hole works great as a nail remover. SORRY FOR THE TANGENT....JUST GOT NOSTOLGIC.
I use the safe in the shop. Insert the slab next to the hinge, then close the door. Cheap fast and effective. tradernick
Snips for new anacs holders, and pcgs holders. All others I place edge up in a vice, and wham smack the heck out of them with a hammer.
Another way to crack out NGC coins is, is you have a vice that opens wide enough, you can insert it and close, it will pop open at the seams.
I use a hammer---I take the slab down to the basement and put the slab on the hard floor...take the hammer and go all the way around it...then just pop it open. Speedy
I would add to put in a 3x5" or so zip-lock bag and go slowly. I was amazed at how easily it gently cracked.
