I like the new corrected cover as I thought the three "errors" was a bit much. Question: Why hardback and not soft? It adds to the price of publishing and I find them difficult to handle as you almost have to break the spine to keep it on page.
you are correct. thank you pointing out the differences to me. I really like varieties and errors. I bookmarked your link.
For me, covers can bend and fold; I want a hard cover to prevent that. When it goes for sale, I might do it in soft cover, but for my personal copy I would like a hard cover. So you think I should put the comma back where I had it? (after "Freaks"?)
Yeah, but I didn't want to give acknowledgement to their atrocities. So it was my attempt not to recognize them. LOL
Whereas Mishaps and Oddities rarely are used to refer to people, Freaks is primarily used to refer to people. Thus I actually think the word Freaks should not be used along side Mishaps and Oddities to describe Coins. Perhaps Freakish Coins would be more "correct", but it would be out of place. Unless maybe "A Sampling of Mishaps, Oddities and other Freakish Coins that Escaped the U.S. Mint". Sorry for being so pedantic.
There are plenty of times where it IS necessary to avoid ambiguity. In this case there is no ambiguity. Therefore it is a matter of personal preference.
The numismatic language at one time actually used both the specific terms "freak" and "oddity" to describe Mint errors. Thus, I chose them carefully
Perfect - that totally works for me. To be honest, what I was talking about is just a matter of personal preference. It ain't wrong, it's just not the way I'd do it.
Oh, believe me, I appreciate your comments very much. I prefer to hear everyone's opinions. You already showed me something that was good to understand.
It is "wrong"? Depends on what you mean by "wrong". But they aren't varieties and I would not refer to them as such myself. I would not pillory someone who does refer to them as such (though I might want to), but I do tend to think less of those who should know better and yet continue to use improper terms. Our hobby is one in which we strive to teach others. Using improper terms defeats that purpose because it introduces confusion and people often "learn" things that then have to later be unlearned. Errors used to be lumped into a group known as "FIDO"'s Freaks, Irregular, Defective, Oddities.
Great cover. It catches my interest right away, especially with the coin lettering and the examples on the cover. I may be old school but I prefer a hardcover reference. I'd like to know when it's available.
