When my son went to China in 1999 to obtain his 1st adopted daughter, and had to stay there awhile. He purchased a partial set there that had these dates. I put them in sealed Air-tites after complete examination. The dimensions were correct as were the weights (he knew they were produced from melted U.S. Silver coins). He was allowed to visit the production site where he had been told they were produced on original salvaged mint presses.

I took them to coin shows for others to examine for value. I didn't tell anyone they were copies, and none ever suspected.

These coins were available on the internet in the past before people just wanted cheap copies. I haven't seen them offered for many years, but suspect someone is selling them here.

I had purchased a Mint State Gem Condition raw 1909 Double Eagle that no one could prove as a copy, being tested as authentic material, weight and dimensions, where eventually it was submitted to TPG. It was returned as "Questionable Authenticity". I eventually sold that coin at an appreciable loss in a bezel.

I've purchased virtually all of my pre-1933 Gold coins since then in certified TPG holders, and am still doing a multi-year study of TPG grading standards. I suspect that "premium" coins are being produced and sold in top tier TPG slabs, but have never had another coin returned as questionable.

I suspect that a questionable coin might be returned with a "details" label, as I know that an appreciable amount of the coins are inaccurately graded. I recently proved same to a group of collectors. They were able to select 5 MS graded Gold coins up to MS65, not being told what was to be proven. 4 could have been returned as improperly graded. The one that passed was CACed. Who knows?
