Have a look at this. It's yet another example of the quality work coming out of China. http://cgi.ebay.com/1794-Liberty-Ca...286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:4|65:10|39:1|240:1318 When I say quality work, I mean likely to deceive a significant portion of the collecting population. When I saw the pictures, my first thought was "Oh, an Edwards copy", which is a contemporary counterfeit of 1796. To see one of those, have a look at http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=360&Lot_No=6959&src=pr Of course they look nothing alike excepting that they both just look wrong. I reported the auction to eBay, we'll see if they take any action.
Awesome job Fish! :thumb: I don't know the half-cents well but I do know the large ones. Here's one I reported to CFE today: http://cgi.ebay.com/1799-Draped-Bust-Large-Cent-Very-RARE_W0QQitemZ270334272123 Here's my message to the seller: "This is without a doubt NOT a 1799. Here is why: The E in LIBERTY is dead center to the hair (above the dip). The numerator in the fraction (the top 1) is way too high. This is clearly a 1798 with an altered date. Ribbit Ps: I sent this to some of my EAC friends so I'd suspect they will be messaging you also." Tom Deck has already confirmed it isn't a 1799 and he says the date is also wrong. Ribbit
How do you know this was made in China, or is even contemporary? I must admit, I'm skeptical of that part (not that it's countefeit). Respectfully...Mike
Frankly I don't see a problem with it, and he probably ended it early because of an error in the description. It isn't a half cent it's a large cent. Haven't checked the variety, but it one of the earlier ones S-21 through about S-49
this piece looks funny too... maybe its just the way he takes pictures... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270333905595&ssPageName=MERC_VIC_RCRX_Pr4_PcY_BID_IT&refitem=280305195753&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&usedrule1=CrossSell_LogicX&refwidgettype=cross_promot_widget&_trksid=p284.m183&_trkparms=algo%3DCRX%26its%3DS%252BI%26itu%3DUCI%252BSI%26otn%3D4
No, the IGWT is way off, the alignment in that motto alone is an indicator of a problem with the piece.
I stand corrected by the lister, and Conder nailed it: It's a large cent. That explains why it looks completely wrong for a half cent.
