It's been a little while since I calculated the value of the gold on a plated quarter. At the time it was less than three cents. It may be five cents now
it almost looks like a silver proof someone cracked out and then it became impaired... does it have a different ring then a regular quarter when you drop it on the counter??
I thought I had a fake CT quarter today also. The second I saw it, I knew it was funky. It feels like it weighs the same. It rings the same when dropped on the counter. It's just shinier than all heck when sitting next to a regular quarter and the lack of copper showing on the outer ring also seemed strange.
Actually I see a touch of copper there on the edge of the one on the left but from this angle one can't tell much. Not to mention it costs to much to fake a quarter. Chances are it's real. It is possible it was polished.
The problem is trying to know the thickness of the plating layer. Just ran some math an if th plating is one ten thousandth of an inch thick, at $1000/oz the plating would contain $1.58 in gold
I have a similar weird 1999 Georgia quarter, pretty sure its a fake though. It slightly less weight then a standard quarter.
