1947 Counterfeit Morgan Dollar????

 

Anything is possible when it comes to Chinese counterfeits.

 

I can't remember the date but it was a Chinese fake Draped Bust dollar , but the date was from after they stopped making them , like an 1806 or something , the sad thing was people were bidding on it before it was pulled .

I've posted a 1947 Morgan on here before, from an auction on Ebay. It is clearly a fantasy counterfeit but still not a bad one to have.

All these coins look pretty good to me - I would have been had. I guess I should never buy another coin again.

That's a common one to find with an altered date. It's a 1798 altered to look like a 1799. You can compare it to these:

On the obverse, the date is wrong and LIBERTY is wrong (E is centered in the dip/droop of hairline) and on the reverse, the fraction is too high and the stems are wrong.

I conferred with Tom Deck that it isn't a 1799, since he knows these better than I, although I'm getting pretty good with them.

Sure do . Im constantly taking fake coins off the market.

Here's a common counterfieted 1909-S VDB cent.

Notice that the center of the "B" of VDB is not on an angle. In addition the "S" mint mark is not the right shape. It doesnt have the square shape that it should have . There is no die chip in the top inner curve & the the tail of the "S" is trumpeted.

Budgood-You are really good about finding these fakes! I am always pleased to see your posts here. As I look at the coins that are counterfeit I see what you pointed out, and now, I can look at a coin and often times see something funny about it. You have shown all of us at CT a lot, and I think it's gradually sinking in. At least in my case. It is always a learning experience here.

By the way. I thought the hen weighed 3 pounds.

HELP HELP HELP HELP~~ I have found 2 VERY SMALL gold 1 D (dollar) coins at my father in laws house... They look VERY much like the 1849-1889 US 1 Dollar coins. Lady liberty head is facing left with 13 stars arround her head. On the back (tails) there is an eagle with three arrows in its tallons, and "The united states of america" that goes arround the whole coin..... and there is "one D" at the bottom to signify 1 dollar denomination.....BUUUUUTTTT THERE IS NO FRIGGIN DATE!??? At least none that I could see.... I am 28 so i think my eyesight is pretty good! And it looks well used.... Can anyone help me with this?

 

If it says "ONE D" then it isn't a US Minted coin. However, it could be a California Gold Fractional Dollar but I can't say I remember one like that. :goofer: You can look on Mike Locke's website to see if you can find it:

1876-S $20 Liberty

This 1876-S $20 was on the top of my list last week to post- finally getting around to it.

As seen in the main pictures the coin has mushy details overall but the real things to see are :

1st there is an odd protrusion comming off the back of the Eagles neck.
2nd the mint mark is very filled in & un natural
3rd there are tool marks going thru the letters of "LIBERTY" in the headband
& fianlly there are many spots on the coin which look like casting marks but more likely rust spots from the poor quality die.

 

Nice post and photos. I noticed that the luster has a strange, sand-grain look to it, not really frosty. The closeup of the eagle's head shows it nicely. The way the 'luster' is distributed is also odd. I have to say, it doesn't look very mushy to me, but I don't look at gold too often!
