Yes ,you are correct they should have more roundness to them on the back side & should be nearly closed. Those 9's have a wide gap & odd shape.
Capped Bust half dollar. I've been looking at capped bust half dollars online and this one immediately struck me as off. I'm not all that familiar with detecting fake coins and have only just begun looking at capped busts. What do you think? I guess it could just be the unusual color that is striking me funny. http://www.ebay.com/itm/160989866365?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
The coins color is due to the photos white balance being wrong. The coin looks to have been cleaned & or polished though. It does look to be authentic but with problems.
Just a thought, but if this gentleman is unfamiliar with the series, it could be that the redesign(s) is also unfamiliar?
Good thought , could be a possibility . I am mobile right now so if you could be so kind as to put up pics of the 2 changes from 1836 that may be helpful for a side by side comparison.
Thanks gentlemen, yes the nose on the redesign is sure ugly. I didn't think anyone would chose that design over the original. Are the oddly shaped stars on the ebay coin because of wear? Do the stars wear less on the edges causing them to become out of balance?
Pick one. 1) Altered 1909 IHC (S added) 2) Altered 1909 VDB (S added) 3) Counterfeit 1869/9 IHC 4) Counterfeit 1858 Double Die Flying Eagle 5) Counterfeit 1909-S IHC
did you happen to notice this before the purchase? If it was in a ngc holder before the side view that would have been very hard to notice.
Germany / Deutsches Reich 10 Mark 1878 / Wilhelm II / Gold? It doesn't have the correct weight for a 10 Mark coin and the color/toning is somehow funny, not like the other gold coins from that time. Most def a counterfeit... maybe gold plated?
@John14: what's wrong with the 5 Mark Graf Zeppelin? I have both the 3 and 5 Marks in my collection but not here right now to compare...
Here is a "GEM" 1905 $2.5 gold .At a quick glance & without magnification this piece would fool many IMO. Once you take a loupe to her though all of the coin's [die's] problems come out in the form of tooling marks made by the die sinker.
I have a couple 1877-S counterfeit Trade Dollars I picked up in Laos awhile back. They had the clang of silver and a nice toning on them. Looked real to me until I took them to the LCS and he showed me the difference in weight and diameter to a real TD. I will post pics tomorrow. When I visit my mom in So. Cal. I go to the local junior college on Sundays where they have like a swap meet but it's really a bunch of stuff set up by 98% Hispanics selling all sorts of goodies. Several of them have "silver" coins for sale. Last trip I picked up 3 silver Mexico coins and brought them home figuring if by chance they were real I could make a huge score next time I went back. Not surprising, they are counterfeit as well being way too light in weight but of course have the silver ding in them. Another seller had some Morgan and Peace dollars that when looking at them were obvious counterfeits. They wanted $3 each for them and I didn't want to spend that kind of money for them but I plan to be back there mid-August so if they are there I might pick up one of each just to post the pics. My LCS told me they put just enough silver in them to give them the ring of a real coin but I have no idea how much that is.
A day late but here are the counterfeit TDs and Mexico coins. I put one of the TDs on top of a real one so you can see the slight difference in the size.
Bump, I'm hoping to see some new Counterfeit coins here to learn from! Also, I added this thread to my "Post Your" sticky.
