Could this be a unplated planchet?

1993 cent. Looks as if this was never plated? It's not smooth like a regular cent. And it still weighs 2.5. CM180719-190843001.jpg CM180719-190909003.jpg CM180719-191044006.jpg CM180719-191114007.jpg CM180719-190927004.jpg

environmental damage. If it was unplated, it would look gray or silver. Your's is greenish brown, like it was buried for a while.

They need to have the original luster visible to be accepted as unplated pieces.

Thee unplated planchet should be weight less than 2.5gr. Around 2.4gr. Yours look ED (Environmental Damaged).

Appears that the plating was removed post mint, and not that it was never plated.

That's okay I'll toss it back in the wild. I thought it was something.

Huh. Never seen one certified as authentic in a TPG slab without some luster.

That's the problem. If it was a non-plated planchet the surfaces should be smooth like a regular cent. Removing the plating results in the rough surface.

As for a genuine having to show some luster, I would not accept one that didn't. Too easy to remove evidence of removed plating with some wear. But you can't add luster to a removed plating coin.
