Could a grading company start up today to rival the Big 3?

No, he wasn't the only founding member. But he's certainly the one who came up with the idea and put it all together. As for an auction house, does it matter ? Selling coins is selling coins.

As for him not submitting them directly to PCGS, OK, I won't argue. But what does that matter either ? He still sells them and always has.

And a long time to be accepted ? People jumped all over it when PCGS opened their doors. They had so many coins coming in and their backlog was so huge that it took 6 - 9 months or longer for people to get their coins back. And it never slowed down, business only increased until they got to the point that they were getting 100,000 coins a month. To my knowledge it has stayed around that level for many years now.

I'm not claiming that there is or ever was anything shady going on between PCGS and David Hall. I'm merely pointing out that he is and always was selling PCGS slabbed coins. And I see no difference between that and David Lawrence selling coins slabbed by DGS. And that that could not be a viable reason for DGS failing.

And to answer somebody else, yes, at one time David Hall most definitely graded coins at PCGS. And until just a few years ago he was the one who did grade reviews at PCGS. He may still do them.

No matter how many times you try to turn gradeflation into a conspiracy theory. You have never provided any proof that the TPG's intentionally changed their grading policies in order to give higher grades. And not everybody agrees with your theory. You like to condemn the TPG's for their change in grading standards since 2004, but I have on numerous occasions shown coins in older holders that you routinely undergrade as well. Furthermore, the sentiment around the coin collecting world via coin forums is that the TPG's became more conservative in their grading after the inception of the CAC in 2007. Funny that you don't recognize this second shift in grading standards. Why is that? The reason is because you still disagree with their assigned grades.

  5. How can anyone be happy with a coin graded by the human eye?
We see things different in every coin we see.
Proof is here on cointalk in the blogs that ask you to grade a coin.
Yet we say we like the top two gradeing companys and trust them with the grade they give our coins.
How many have cracked out a coin that had a low grade sent it back to another gradeing company and got a better grade.
I dont buy slabs and grade my own as i feel i am as good as the high dollor gradeing companys and that good money is wasted each day.
Mine will not bring what the slab coins will but i dont worry about selling it and hope it will cover the money i spent haveing it graded.
A coin of good value will sell its self with out a fancy ribbon and plastic cover..

The other big name in the founding of PCGS was John Albanese (sp?). After a year he left and formed NGC. Later he left NGC and most recently formed CAC. Is he still with CAC? If not what will he do next? Could he start another new grading service that could give the top two a run? He has three under his belt already. If he tried again would you bet against it?

One problem any new startup would have is the knee jerk reaction that so many collectors have that "if it isn't PCGS or NGC then it isn't any good". Many collectors would not be willing to even give them a chance, it's not one of the big two so it has to be wrong. They don't go looking to see how they grade, they go looking to find fault. Then you have the Kool-Aid drinkers that quote the mantra "PCGS or nothing".

As long as there are those who are willing to shell out a lot of money on plastic, stickers and opinions, then there will always be the possibility of competitors. I'd favor a trend away from this trend, but then again I'm an old school purist when it comes to my hobby and my opinion isn't important to anyone but me.
