That's actually rather cool, with the question being, where am I going to get all those millions of pennies to sort?
They actually have 2 lower priced models on the website listed in the auction, I will buy the mid level one. My bank has promised to give me $100 a week in " pennies", and I have yet to ask my company bank, they should be able to do at least the same. Between the new metal detectors and the penny sorter, this winter looks to be a busy one !!
Heh. I've been getting about $100-150 a week in cents from the bank I get halves from.. I don't know how much longer they'll let me keep this up, but I better start thinking of Christmas gifts for the staff! And then, I've got to figure out how to convince my gf that this is snowballing hobby is somehow good for the relationship (or beneficial to her, of course. ).
I can go thru about $100 in a week by hand, and I find about 15% coppers average. Not a get rich quick scheme, but putting them up at face value, can't go wrong. I predict the coppers will be the next wheaties. The " Apprentice" model should speed things up and free my old eyes from the job. The video on the website looks decent enough, I'm going to give it a shot.
so on that ebay auction of a $50 bag of copper pennys sold for $125. wow. it is really tempting to get one of those machines and hit up all the banks for pennys. I'm trying to find the bad sides to this idea...
I just did a little experiment. Dumped out my change jar (which I take to the bank about once every 2 weeks) and I had 65 pennys in it. I seperated the pre-1982 from the post-1982 and got 20 pre-1982 and 45 post-1982. Maybe that was a lucky group, but i got 30% coppers. I could see this being very profitable if you can get the banks to give you enough pennys.
WAAAIT A MINUTE.. Where's mrbrklyn?! Why didn't anyone tell him of this back in July? He could be well beyond $10000 at this point!
Pennies from Heaven!!!!! I agree about saving the pre-1982 pennies. But before you get too excited, they weigh lots and lots!!! I've only got about $40 worth of pre-1982 pennies that I've plucked from pocket change and I use the two boxes as bookends - I'm NOT kidding. If you could get 2x or 5x for your pennies one day, you would need a lot to really make it interesting. Remember, it takes two rolls just to make a dollar. Right now, I've got about 10 rolls of pennies and 2 rolls of nickels in a box on my kitchen table and it's HEAVY! Now multiply by 100!!!! I know I'm going on and on here, but that is what most people discover. It doesn't take much space, but they sure be heavy!
Indeed, they're heavy. I just weighed one of the bags of copper cents in the Vwap Horde, and it weighed 34.2lbs (including the weight of the canvas bag). That should be fun to mail...
the post office sells flat rate boxes don't they? as long as the pennys will fit in the box wiegt shouldn't matter...
Oh, and that was a bag of $50 in cents. Yes, the PO does sell flat rate boxes. This bag would fit just fine into one of those boxes, but I'm not sure just how much abuse they can take -- you'd need some pretty good padding around the sides of the bag... I'd think splitting them into two batches would be more manageable for both the box itself and also the PO (though, obviously, twice as expensive...)..
For Canadian Collectors its even easier. Up to 1996 and 98% copper instead of 95% lucky us. I only have about 5.00 saved up, but there all pre-1970
Just double up the walls and floor/top. Priority boxes are free, so grab 2 and cut the 2nd one to fit inside the first. I ship cases of 12 hot sauces this way all the time and they never break. Any extra space, pack in as many styro peanuts as you can.
Hm. great idea. Don't know why I didn't think to cut up a box.. I've done that to reinforce boxes that I'm storing heavier items in, which should work perfectly for shipping too. <-- not so smrt this late at night..
Hey Vwap, did you ever get the other half of my contest coins? The handful of wheat cents from Semius Dei? Later and goodnight, it's been a longgggg day.
