Very cool variety!! Nice score and good job with knowing what you had in front of you. I would have had no idea what it was, but I probably would have bought it for what was going on on the reverse. Interesting coins like this are just attractive to me.
I still say it's MDD, the doubling is flat shelf like. All of the 1838 half dimes started with large stars, the small star varieties were due to die polishing that reduced the size of the stars. I don't believe there is a variety with large over small or small over large stars.
