The people who would be most likely to buy a coin like the Commodus are the same people most likely not to even look at slabbed coins. This same coin in a slab might not have attracted any more interest than it did. Had the coin been marketed in a venue that attracts collectors after this sort of thing rather than overpriced slabbed antoniniani, I doubt you would have made the statement: Certainly I would not have paid more than 10% what you did but that is largely why I don't look at HA sales. Those I know who are looking for $ 4digit Provincials are more likely to seek a coin like this in a Triton sale. Again certainly, cheapskates like me would be more likely to buy the coin in lower grade from neither of those big sources either. My most recently posted here coin even a little similar is this much lower grade and much more common Stratoniceia AE38 Caracalla which I bought largely for the countermark (common mark but a nice strike) probably for more than you would pay for such an ugly coin. A nicer one (unless you like the countermark): http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=249690 I apologize. Obviously you were offended by my post. I thought I was saying nice things about the coin but you did not see it that way.
No, it is I who should apologize. My comments were not to criticize, and I do understand you were saying nice things. The written word is far more difficult than the spoken, and it is easy to misunderstand and often leads to trouble (I am sure many saw the hole I dug myself recently). I'll try to be more articulate in the future.
I like big impressive provincial coins like yours. The extreme rarity would be important if the demand is there for these provincials from Lydia (you would have a better idea than I). I have a few big provincials that are also very rare (including Plautilla and Balbinus) for which I paid a few hundred. I'd imagine a retail value of something similar for the Commodus. Incidentally i need a nice big Antinous, and I'd pay a lot more than that of course, so keep me in mind if you find one
