I have to agree with the St. Gaudens idea. Get something that the bullion value has just overtaken the numismatic value. That way, your downside is limited, and you can enjoy the upside. Personally, I've been working on my Peace dollar collection, but that is personal preference. With 3K to work with, you have many possibilities. Choose something that you enjoy.
