I absolutely agree with you Thad. WE ALL HAVE BOUGHT PROBLEM COINS!!!! Question is what to do with them. They are not worthless, just WORTH Less. Cleaned S VDB's still go for $700-1000 in genuine holders at times depending on eye appeal. Worthless?? Hardly. Many would pay $700 for a cleaned EF rarity than pay $1300 + for the same grade coin uncleaned if funds were tight and they really wanted the coin and that's the most they could afford (aren't we all poor nowadays??). If we can improve the look of these coins to more natural why would we leave them ugly- I am mostly responding to GD's post. I don't understand such a response. I think we should all try to tone our damaged, scratched coins in order to have a pretty coin for the future. Heavily toned coins hide damage. We all know that and some of those coins go for big money. As long as we don't dip the coin, who cares. An attractive coin is an attractive coin. A freshly dipped pink/pumpkin Lincoln is bottom line ugly. If one could improve the look of such coins why would we leave them ugly. Look at all the Barber dimes/quarters that are heavily toned with beautiful colors-blues, reds, magenta, etc.. Are they scratched, rubbed, scrubbed under that toning? We would never know unless we dipped them. Dipping should always be done knowing you might get a thrashed coin afterward. Dip at your own risk. I have never dipped a valuable coin. I only do on low value coins for my learning. I have some badly carbon spotted coins that I inherited with 63 reverses and damaged obverses. I have dipped those for fun. They were only worth melt. Just my humble thoughts.

By the way I sent the S VDB to NCS. I know what I said about NCS but I believe they are good at these type of coins. Doug said you need to know what type of coins to send. This was is one of them in my opinion. I know they are good at getting off ugly toning which my coin has and I know what's under this coin. I have acetoned all the oil out of it and have seen it as raw as can be. If they get off that gray look I will be elated. If it comes back very light or cleaned looking that's ok. I will get it retoned. I won't quit this coin!!

Marked for them to send to NGC if it will grade. I will start a new post when it's back. Hopefully all can learn from my shanangains- is that how you spell that??

:whistle::crying::mouth:hya:encil::headbang::desk::kewl::vanish::smile:hail::bigeyes::goof:
